Black Copper Oxide

Ebonol C (a proprietary blackening treatment from Enthone-OMI) is easily applied to the interior surfaces of electroformed coldshields when the usual electrodeposition sequence is copper, nickel, gold, followed by final machining operations and dissolution of the aluminum mandrel.  The free standing coldshield will have exposed copper only on the interior surfaces, so blackening occurs only on the interior; the exterior is already gold and of course the gold does not react during this step.  In those cases where it is desirable to blacken part of the exterior, the nickel and gold can be carefully removed during secondary machining, exposing copper.
